Washtenaw Community College
Washtenaw Community College (WCC) offers a Dental Assisting Program designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the dental field. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and takes approximately 10 months to complete.
The Dental Assisting Program at WCC consists of both classroom and clinical instruction. Students learn about dental anatomy, radiology, infection control, dental materials, and office procedures. They also receive training in dental assisting techniques, such as chairside assisting, dental impressions, and dental instrument sterilization.
The program requires students to complete 36 credit hours, which includes a minimum of 300 hours of clinical experience. Clinical rotations take place at various dental facilities throughout the community, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in real-world dental settings.
To be eligible for the program, students must have a high school diploma or GED, complete the required prerequisite courses, and pass a background check and health screening. They must also complete a placement test to demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and math.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification exam. Certification is not required to work as a dental assistant in Michigan, but it may enhance employment opportunities and earning potential.
WCC’s Dental Assisting Program is known for its quality instruction, hands-on training, and strong clinical partnerships. Graduates of the program are well-prepared to enter the dental field as competent and confident dental assistants.
